In today’s social media frenzy, the anxiety surrounding the selfie can be really detrimental to the mental state of posters. The idea that you aren’t good enough until you get a certain number of likes, or attractive enough unless you have a filter creeps into the minds of all, whether you realize it or not. Soon enough, you find yourself relying on comments from others for your own self validation.

So how do we get out of this seemingly inevitable mindset and still remain logged in to our digital world?

Recently, I was challenged to take a picture of myself every day, no matter how I feel or what I look like, and the results thus far have been incredible. While I’ve posted almost none of these on my personal social media accounts, looking back at them shows the change in my day-to-day mindset and makes me appreciate my life more as a whole.

Half of the time when I look in the mirror, I’m too busy picking apart all of my imperfections to even notice the beauty in just being me, but looking back at all of my old pictures, I wonder what I ever had to be self conscious about in the first place. Having some space from my pictures made me notice just how important your mindset is–a negative mindset in the moment creates a negative view on my appearance, whereas an fresh mindset on an old picture made me realize just how beautiful I was without even realizing it.

I’ve started viewing myself as real-life beautiful in addition to the typical aesthetically pleasing for social media beauty. I’ve started noticing the changes in my life, appreciating the memories, and enjoying every moment for what it is.

So now, I challenge you, too, to the Selfie Challenge. Take a photo every day, no matter how you feel, and you’ll start seeing happiness in the reality of your life!
